SAP launches Joule Work and Business AI Platform at Connect

SAP unveiled Joule Work, Joule Assistants and the SAP Business AI Platform at its Connect event in Las Vegas. The pitch is straightforward: move AI from a conversational assistant into an execution engine that can take action across procurement, finance and supply chain without waiting for a human to click approve.

What caught our attention is how this reshapes the specialist profile companies will look for. A finance transformation lead we placed earlier this year spent half her interview explaining how she would govern automated posting rules. That governance question now sits at the centre of what clients want to understand before they make an offer.

When a system can autonomously clear intercompany balances or adjust inventory replenishment based on demand signals, the person overseeing it needs to think in exception-handling terms. We have already seen this in searches for S/4HANA controllers in Munich and Zurich: the specification now includes experience defining audit trails for automated journal entries.

For candidates building a career in SAP, the conversations we have with hiring managers circle around who can articulate why a rule should fire and when it should escalate. A governance and risk mindset layered on top of technical fluency is what separates shortlisted candidates from the rest.

Companies rolling out S/4HANA should consider whether their team can absorb this level of automation without creating blind spots. The strongest hires we have made recently are people who push back on full automation where the edge cases are fuzzy, and who know how to build the controls that let a CFO sleep at night.
