The PCAOB’s latest inspection data shows a marked drop in Part I.A audit deficiencies at the major companies, citing better training, tighter accountability and smarter use of technology. For the companies being audited, this is welcome news. For finance leaders building teams, it raises a practical question: what does higher external audit quality mean for internal expectations?<\/p>\n
One consequence is a shift in what CFOs ask for when they hire controllers and internal audit managers. The requirement now includes someone who can anticipate the auditors’ questions before they arrive. Controllers and internal audit leads need deeper technical accounting knowledge combined with fluency in data analytics and the systems that produce audit trails. A controller who spots a gap before the external auditors flag it carries more weight in the hiring process than one who responds after the fact.<\/p>\n
This pattern is especially visible in companies that operate across multiple jurisdictions. Cross-border consolidation, intercompany pricing, and local GAAP reconciliations all create friction points that auditors scrutinise closely. Finance leaders who have lived through a contentious audit, or who have had to explain a restatement to their board, tend to weight these skills heavily in the hiring spec.<\/p>\n
Candidates who can demonstrate both accounting judgement and systems fluency tend to progress faster through interview processes. We placed a senior internal audit manager in Frankfurt earlier this year whose background combined Big Four external audit with hands-on experience building automated reconciliation workflows. The hiring CFO said that combination was exactly what moved her ahead of other candidates with stronger pure-accounting credentials.<\/p>\n
Companies should revisit job descriptions for controllership and internal audit roles. If the spec still reads like something written before the current quality push, it probably needs updating.<\/p>\n
